Lunch with Will Finn

(A posing Will Finn, infront of his place of work Disney TV)

On March 18th, I met Will Finn for Lunch at a local Thai restaurant around the block from Disney TV's offices. Along the way Will and I began chatting a bit on the research I am conducting as well as his path along the feature animation path. Will has a very interesting career path that holds a range of diversities. He has worked with Don Bluth on Secret of NIMH, The Chipmunk Adventure, and of course his memorable characters at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Its amazing too that I learned throughout the interview that companies Will would work for would beg him to work in their story department because he was talented in those areas as well. Will stuck to his guns and his passion for character animation and took jobs that would allow him to showcase his stuff, until soon he was connected with Disney Animation where once again he was asked to do story, but he was able to persuade them to allow him to animate! WELL DONE WILL! The characters that he brought to life are truly unique to Will and he brings a wonderful mix of dynamic character performance with subtle emotional acting. I was very honored to have Will share his story with me.

We also touched on influences of Will and his inspiration for some of the remarkable characters he brought to life through feature animation. Unfortunately, our recorded conversation was cut short by my recorders battery life, but Will was kind enough to take on some questions via email, as follow up, which I was grateful to him for! I really wish I had the last section of the recording because we got into some great items. I jotted down as much as I could remember when I got back from lunch, but I am sure I missed some bits! BUT, I hope this isn't the last time Will and I will talk, and I am sure it wont be as the animation world is a small place!

I wanted to express my thanks to Will for taking me out to lunch and spending time with me to discuss his knowledge of animation and his current workings in directing and story. I have had such an amazing experience with all three interviews so far and I am in the process of locking in a few more over the summer months! Thanks to Tom Sito, for Will's contact and once again, thanks to Will for opening his doors to me and allowing me to learn from his experiences and animation intelect!

Once again, I am looking to assemble a nicely put together, professional publication of all three interviews, with the interviewers approval of course. I also have audio interviews with all three, but they all range in sound quality, so for now, I will just work on putting these wonderful experiences into written and illustrated documentation.

Check out Will's blog : SMALL ROOM (its really great! :) )
